  Week  of  October  1

Reading goals:   Introduce the letter Ss.  The children will be doing many activities to learn how to write the letter S as well as learn the sound S makes.  The children will also continue to review the letters and sounds of  Rr and Mm.

We will also continue to review the sight words  am, is, like, red, blue, can.

Math goals:  We  will continue to practice writing the numbers 0-10 for one more week.  It is amazing how much they have progressed in this process.  The Core Standard for first quarter is to be writing the numbers 0-20 by the end of October.

This week we will focus on number sense.  That means the students can show me ways to make a given number different ways.  In class they will be using tiles and blocks to make 5-9.  Examples are:
5  is  3 red and 2 blue.   5 is 4black and 1 yellow.   5 is 1 yellow, 1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, and 1 purple.

We will continue to compare numbers and groups of object to determine greater/less, more/fewer.

Purple Hand Pledge
I will not use my  words or my hands
to hurt myself or others.

This week we took time for the students to tell each other how their
classmates were kind, helpful, and friendly towards each other.  From
the discussion the students themselves voted for Joe to receive the Purple
Hand cookie that will be given to one student in each room on the last
Friday of the month.

I am looking for a sunflower plant, roots and all.  We would use this for science and math activities.  Please contact me if you have one we could use in our classroom.  Thank you.
